On July 4th 2007 Cinema For Thurso Group launched "THE BIG GIG" festival. Originally created by local film maker, Darren Manson in 2004, it was proposed to the board of Directors of Caithness Arts as a showcase live music event to promote local bands. The idea was quickly expanded. Last year the event name was placed on loan to a local charity for their own live music event.
Meanwhile we moved to launch the film festival which is designed to as a showcase for amateur, student and low budget film makers- it's not a competition.
Created from archive footage from the "Thurso Topicals" collection, "Breakdance - No Stoppin" has been made especially for the first Big Gig. It features material from original VHS masters of local breakdancers at competitions and in the street. B-boys from all over Scotland are seen here. Originally filmed in 1986.
These three scenes are from an American entry to The Big Gig. "Chad Vader- Day Shift Manager" is a brilliant mini-series set in a grocery store based around the "Star Wars" movies. The film is highly acclaimed and a huge hit on the net. Chad will be showing on the big screen along with extra features including unseen material.
Red Rock Blues is another American contribution. The support from the States has been extremely good.
The Big Gig features 30 movies from Scotland and America. We have received films from Austrailia as well but you'll have to wait until the next Big Gig to see them. Entry for the 2008 event is now open.
The whole idea of a live music event has never been far off the horizon and our earliest efforts were in 2002 until we put the idea to the board of directors of Caithness Arts in 2004. The email below is part of the online discussion that occurred at the time. Whilst you can't copyright a name you can copyright an event including it's name. With the proposal made by email it enters an area known as "Automatic Copyright".
