From The War Years
This selection of images have been 'quick-flipped' from original negatives in our archive. They are part of the Thurso Topicals Archive. The images were taken mostly during World War II in Europe. We make no attempt to tell you anything more as the only man who could tell us about these pictures past away some years ago. Whilst they don't show the horrors of war we ask that you bare in mind the efforts of ordinary people in extra-ordinary circumstances who worked for our benefit. In spite of the problems facing people today, the world is still a good place and could have been much worse off had it not been for their efforts. We remain in their debt.
To the right and below: At the end of World War 1 the German High Seas Fleet was interred at Scapa Flow in Orkney, however the German crews scuttled the fleet at anchor one morning much to the surprise of the British milletary and the Orkney people. After the war the fleet was raised for scrap. Some ships remain at the bottom of the Flow.
